Pasture & Forage

At OsGro we recognise that no two farming operations are the same.

We have access to an extensive range of pasture and forage seeds to suit the soil and goals of your farm. We’re here to give expert advice on the best seed for your farm.

OsGro offers custom mixed and coated seeds which means we can provide clients with the exact product for your farm requirements and feed demands.

We pride ourselves on staying up with the ever changing developments in the industry to ensure we provide our clients with the best of the best.

We do this by monitoring national and local seed trials, staying connected with other players in the industry on new developments and by doing our own in-house seed evaluation trials.

Organic & Human Consumption

We work closely with a number of major players in the industry to help source NZ grown products such as pearled barley and navy beans.

Vineyard & Orchard Seeds

We have 10+ years of agronomy experience in this field, with Jeremy having worked in all major grape growing regions in New Zealand (Gisbourne, Hawke’s Bay, Central Otago and Marlborough).

OsGro currently supplies customised seed mixes for a variety of vineyards and orchards throughout the country, with Jeremy’s experience meaning he has excellent knowledge of the challenges and climate of the different regions.

We work very closely with a number of organic growers, providing them with a number of beneficial insect cover crops and biomass crops depending on the challenges.

Taking care of the soil is vital to ensuring the future success of the growing system. It’s becoming more and more popular for vineyards to sow inter-row cover crops as a way to increase yield of healthy grapes, with the help of nature.

Cover Crops

At OsGro we believe cover crops are the future of sustainable agriculture.

Cover crops are often referred to as ‘green manures’ due to the recycling of organic matter and enhancement of microbial activity in soils.

They offer many benefits and with expert help can be a great option for a variety of farms.

BENEFITS OF COVER CROPS

  • Improved:

    • Soil fertility and quality (increases water/nutrient capacity, buffering and biomass over time)

    • Nutrient cycling

    • Soil structure and stability (increased water retention helps protect from wind and water erosion)

    • Regulation of vine growth

    • Soil compaction

  • Enhanced biological diversification

  • Providing habitats for beneficial insect species

  • They also look great when they’re flowering!

  • Good for the environment (increased soil carbon sequestration is one strategy to offset atmospheric carbon dioxide levels)

  • Pest management

  • Bio-tillage

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING A COVER CROP

  • There are a number of factors to consider when choosing which cover crop species to plant and what the ideal sowing rate should be.

  • Here as OsGro we have expert specialist advisory services to ensure you make the right choice.

  • Some factors to consider are:

    • Soil type

    • Paddock condition

    • Seasonal, environmental and climatic conditions

    • What your end goal is
